Liverpool River of Light 2025 Photo Workshops

Join us this October for one of Liverpool’s most spectacular annual events – the River of Light 2025 festival. From 24th October to 2nd November, the city’s waterfront will come alive with large-scale illuminated artworks, and this relaxed photowalk is the perfect way to capture the displays in their full glory.

These workshops are gratuity-based – there’s no upfront fee, but the generosity of attendees helps me keep offering these sessions to the community. We’ll walk the Liverpool River of Light trail, visiting the installations and sharing tips on how to photograph light displays at night, including composition, exposure, and how to get the most from both cameras and smartphones.

With the event running for just one week this year, workshops will take place most evenings. Places are limited to 12 per walk and demand is always high, so please only book if you are certain you can attend – no-shows mean others miss out on this popular experience. Adding the date to your diary straight away really helps ensure spaces aren’t wasted.

Workshops will go ahead whatever the weather, so please come prepared with waterproofs or umbrellas. Some artworks are weather-dependent, so the installations you see may vary night to night. A few sessions will start earlier than previous years to avoid peak crowds, and for those seeking the quietest experience, Halloween (31st October) is usually the calmest evening.

Suitable for all skill levels – from complete beginners to experienced photographers – and any type of camera, including camera phones. Tripods are recommended for those who own them, as they’ll help capture the best possible long-exposure shots of the light trails and reflections along Liverpool’s waterfront.

(Bookings are limited to 3 people per booking to help reduce the risk of no-shows, for group bookings of 4 or more people an upfront £15pp is required.)

*Free Neon Light Photography Workshops are offered for no upfront fee, all I ask is that participants consider giving whatever they feel the workshop was worth to them at the end of the route. I’ll never pressure you to tip; I believe that, if money is given, it should be voluntary and in direct proportion to the quality of the workshop and the budget of those attending. It’s a kind of satisfaction guarantee, if you don’t enjoy the workshop, just walk away, no questions asked. As this is a public artwork display I cannot guarantee all artworks will be available each night. If, as in previous years, bad weather causes the event to be cancelled for a night the walk will not take place and all attendees will be informed by email/text/sms.
