I’m Liam, the photographer behind Neon Light Photography, and I’ve been running photography walks, workshops and 1:1 sessions across the North West and North Wales for several years.
Photography has been a big part of my life for a long time, but what I enjoy most is helping others feel more comfortable and confident with their cameras — especially outdoors. A 1:1 photography workshop is my most personal way of doing that, giving us the time and space to slow things down and focus on what matters to you.
These sessions are built entirely around your interests, your camera, and the kind of places you enjoy photographing. There’s no set lesson plan and no pressure to perform — just practical, in-the-field guidance as we walk, shoot, talk and respond to what the landscape gives us.
Group workshops are a great way to learn alongside others, but they naturally move at a shared pace. A 1:1 session is different.
Here, we can pause when something doesn’t quite make sense. We can revisit ideas. We can change direction if the light isn’t doing what we hoped. If a question comes up, we follow it rather than parking it for later.
For many people, that space to think and ask questions freely is where things finally click — not because they’re learning more, but because they’re learning in a way that suits them. My style is and will always be relaxed and at your pace, photography is about exploring the beauty around us, and the best way to do that is to slow down.
There’s no rigid structure to a 1:1 workshop. Instead, the session unfolds naturally as we move through the location together.
You might want help getting to grips with your camera and understanding why certain settings work better than others. You might want to improve composition, or learn how to see shapes, light and balance in the landscape. Or you might simply want the experience of photographing alongside someone who’s comfortable working outdoors and thinking creatively about what’s in front of them.
We’ll talk through ideas as we go, try things out, see what works, and adjust. Mistakes aren’t a problem — they’re often the most useful part of the process.
Most 1:1 workshops take place across the North West of England and North Wales, with the location usually chosen by you.
That might be somewhere familiar that you’d like to see differently, or somewhere new that you’ve wanted to explore for a while but haven’t felt confident visiting alone. Coastal and landscape locations are the most common, but woodland and rural settings work just as well.
For photographers who are more confident, I also offer sessions where the focus is on safe access rather than technique — reaching places like exposed coastal routes or islands where timing, local knowledge and conditions matter just as much as photography.
If you’re unsure where to go, I’m always happy to suggest locations that suit both your experience and what you want to work on.
I keep pricing deliberately simple and fair.
Sessions are £55 per hour, and every booking includes a free 30-minute introductory period. We use that time to meet, talk through what you want from the session, and make sure it feels right for you.
If after that first half hour you decide it’s not for you, there’s nothing to pay.
Most people book two hours, which usually works out as around 2½ hours together once the free time is included. I’m not strict about the clock – if we finish shooting and walk back talking photography, I’m not adding extra charges. The aim is for the session to feel complete, not cut short.
Many people who book a 1:1 have already attended one of my walks or beginner workshops and want to take things further. Others come along with a voucher, or simply prefer learning one-to-one rather than in a group.
What they usually have in common is a sense that they enjoy photography, but feel they’re guessing — with settings, with composition, or with where to go next. A 1:1 session gives you the space to work through that properly, without distraction or pressure.
My approach to 1:1 workshops is relaxed, practical and supportive. We’re not out there to chase perfection or to work through a checklist of techniques. Instead, we focus on enjoying photography and learning in a way that feels natural and unpressured.
I don’t overload people with technical language, and I don’t force manual mode just for the sake of it. If you’re happy shooting in Auto, that’s absolutely fine. What matters to me is that you enjoy taking photographs and come away with a clearer understanding of why something worked — or didn’t — so you can build on it next time.
Because these sessions are one-to-one, we can slow things down. If something doesn’t click straight away, we revisit it. If conditions change, we adapt. Often the most useful learning happens in those moments when things don’t go exactly to plan.
The workshop doesn’t have to end when we pack the camera away either. I’m very happy to give feedback on photos you take afterwards, and I also offer post-processing sessions if you’d like help developing your images further. There’s no extra pressure to book more time — just ongoing support if you want it.
People often tell me they enjoy learning this way because it feels open, approachable and genuinely focused on their photography, rather than what they think they should be doing.
If a 1:1 photography workshop sounds like the right next step for you, booking is simple and flexible.
If you already have an idea of what you’d like help with – or just want to talk it through – the easiest way to book is to get in touch by email.
We can discuss:
What you’d like to focus on
Possible locations
How much time you might need
There’s no obligation to book straight away. I’m always happy to chat things through and help you decide whether a 1:1 session is the right fit.

1:1 workshops can also be purchased as a gift voucher, which is a popular option for birthdays, Christmas, or anyone who enjoys photography but would benefit from some focused guidance.
Vouchers are:
Valid for 1:1 photography workshops
Flexible on date and location
A great option if you’re buying for someone else
Once the voucher has been purchased, the recipient can get in touch to arrange a session that suits them.
If you’re unsure whether to book directly or buy a voucher — or you’d just like to ask a few questions first — drop me an email and we’ll take it from there.
There’s no pressure and no expectation. We’ll work out what makes sense for you.
Not everyone who books a private session is looking for photography tuition — and that’s absolutely fine.
A significant part of my 1:1 work is with photographers who are confident with their cameras but would value local knowledge, route planning and reassurance in places that feel a little more daunting to visit alone.
Maybe there’s a mountain you’ve always wanted to climb for a particular view.
Maybe there’s a stretch of coastline you’d like to explore, but you’re unsure about access, conditions or tides.
Or maybe there’s a small island off the Wirral coast you’ve wanted to photograph, but the logistics have always felt like a barrier.
In these sessions, the focus is much more on the walk and the route than on technical tuition. I take care of the planning, timing and practical considerations, so you can concentrate on the experience — and the photography that comes with it.
They’re still personal, relaxed sessions, shaped around you and what you want to achieve. Photography advice is always there if you want it, but it’s never forced.
These guided sessions are available on request, and can be arranged for individuals or small groups. Pricing is broadly in line with my 1:1 workshops, with any travel considerations agreed in advance.
If this sounds like the kind of support you’re looking for, get in touch and we can talk through what you have in mind.
