Why Join a Gratuity Walk?

My photography walks are all about keeping things relaxed, welcoming and open to everyone. There’s no upfront fee – instead, you decide what the experience was worth afterwards.

It’s a simple way to make photography more accessible. Similar workshops elsewhere can cost £20-£50, but I prefer to keep things flexible so you can enjoy the day without pressure. Whether you’re picking up a camera for the first time or refining your skills, these walks are designed for all levels – even if you’re just using a phone.

My walks are gratuity-based. That means there’s no upfront fee — you simply book a place and join in. At the end of the walk, you can decide what the experience was worth to you and contribute accordingly.

This makes the walks accessible to everyone while still reflecting the value of your time and learning. As a guide, similar photography workshops often cost £20–£50, but here the choice is completely yours.

Each walk is different depending on the location, but typical topics we cover include:

  • Understanding your camera and moving away from automatic mode

  • The exposure triangle: aperture, shutter speed and ISO explained simply

  • Compositional techniques like the rule of thirds, leading lines and framing

  • Spotting and planning shots before they happen

  • Adapting to light and weather conditions

  • Tips for both DSLR/mirrorless cameras and phone photography

These walks are about more than just pictures:

  • Mindfulness – slowing down and seeing the world differently through your lens

  • Fresh air – the joy of getting outdoors across Wirral, Liverpool and North Wales

  • Community – meet like-minded people in a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere

  • Personal growth – discover new skills and creative confidence

I started these walks after the COVID-19 pandemic as a way to connect, learn and recharge — and they’ve been at the heart of my photography ever since.

  • Group size: Small groups, so there’s always time for personal guidance

  • Atmosphere: Relaxed, friendly and pressure-free — it’s about learning at your pace

  • Locations: From tidal islands like Hilbre, to Liverpool’s vibrant city streets, to iconic coastal spots across Wirral and North Wales

  • Who it’s for: Absolute beginners, casual photographers, and experienced shooters alike

  • What to bring: Any camera (or phone), suitable footwear, and a sense of adventure!

Follow the golden jacket...

I'm Liam, you're local photography guide, I've been running walks and workshops now for over 5 years, helping hundreds of walkers experience the great outdoors and always wearing my distinctive gold/yellow jacket!

I started this journey wanting to help those struggling with their mental health following the 2019 pandemic to get out into our countryside, using their cameras as an excuse to explore and I'm now heading into my 5th year!

My workshops are for everyone, beginners to experts, we'll always find something amazing to photograph together!

So whether you're new to photography or an experienced shooter, book one of my walks today, follow the golden jacket, and lets take great photos!
