Bidston Windmill & Woodlands
Join me for a peaceful photography walk through the woodlands of Bidston Hill, one of the Wirral’s most varied and atmospheric green spaces. This walk blends shady woodland paths, open sandstone viewpoints and historic landmarks, making it a brilliant location for photographers of all levels.
We’ll begin at the main car park on Bidston Hill, gradually making our way through the surrounding woodland and scrubland. Along the way, we’ll look at how to work with dappled light, strong contrast, and changing conditions beneath the trees — a great chance to practise composition when the light isn’t always straightforward.
The walk then opens out onto the sandstone hilltop, where the striking silhouette of Bidston Windmill dominates the skyline. From here, the landscape changes completely: open skies, textured rock, and long views across the Wirral and beyond. We’ll spend time around the windmill experimenting with framing, foregrounds and scale before continuing towards the nearby observatory and lighthouse.
To finish, we loop back through the woodland, giving us a different feel on the return leg as the light shifts and the environment changes. It’s a varied, unhurried walk that offers plenty of opportunities to slow down, observe, and create thoughtful images.
As with all my walks, this session is free to attend (gratuity-based), friendly, and pressure-free. Camera phones, beginners, and experienced photographers are all very welcome.
*Free Neon Light Photowalks are offered for no upfront fee, all I ask is that participants consider giving whatever they feel the walk was worth to them at the end of the walk with no expectation. I’ll never pressure you to tip; I believe that, if money is given, it should be voluntary and in direct proportion to the quality of the walk and the budget of those attending. It’s a kind of satisfaction guarantee, if you don’t enjoy the walk, just walk away, no questions asked. I am often asked what is a suitable amount to tip, as this is a personal choice I can only tell you that most people choose to give between £5-£20 dependant on how much they enjoy the event and how much value they feel they receive from the walk.Â
