Chester City Walls Photowalk

Join me for an atmospheric evening photography walk around the Chester City Walls, a complete circuit that offers constantly changing views of this historic city as the light shifts and streetlights begin to glow.

This walk is timed to begin in late afternoon, allowing us to work through golden hour, sunset and into blue hour, when Chester’s warm sandstone, historic gateways and riverside paths take on a completely different character.

We’ll start from the Little Roodee car park, heading out along the walls past Chester Racecourse, where wide open views give way to more enclosed, textural sections of stonework. As we pass the Northgate, we’ll slow down to explore details in the old sandstone – arches, shadows, repeating lines and contrasts between old and new.

As the sun sets, the city begins to change. Artificial light blends with the remaining glow in the sky, shop windows come alive, and the walls offer elevated viewpoints that are perfect for storytelling compositions. We’ll then descend to the River Dee, finishing the walk with calmer, reflective scenes along the water before looping back towards the castle and car park around an hour after sunset.

This is a relaxed, exploratory walk designed for all experience levels, including camera phone users. As always, it’s free to attend (gratuity-based), with a friendly pace and plenty of time to talk through ideas as we go.
