Grey Seal Spotting Sunset Walk

If you want to spot grey seals out at Hilbre the best time is high tide, so why not join a local guide as we head out to watch the sunset surrounded by the sea and seals.

This has always been my favourite walk on the Wirral and with at high tide it’s even better. For this walk we race the incoming tide to reach Middle Eye as Hilbre is cut off by the waves, then just after high water we cross to Hilbre to watch the sunset from the Lifeboat Station spotting seals bobbing in the waters around us.

We start at West Kirby Sailing School and walk out across the sands to Little Eye, we then turn along the rocky bank heading for Middle Eye to arrive on the island just before the High Tide. Here we stay for an hour or so as the water begins to recede we’ll cross to Hilbre.

We’ll then watch the sunset before heading back across the sands to West Kirby.

Overall a 3/4 hour trip taking in one of the most beautiful and peaceful places on the Wirral.

Total length of the walk is approximately 4.5miles.

*This walk is only available at specific tidal conditions when the tide cuts the island off for approx 20-30 minutes. You should not walk to Hilbre at high tide unless you are with an experienced guide who knows the tides and can plan a route safely.
